Coastal Curves and the Open Road: Discover the Perfect Motorcycle Getaway on Isle Madame

Hey there, fellow riders! If you’re gearing up for your Cabot Trail motorcycle adventure, let me suggest a hidden gem you won’t want to miss: Isle Madame.  This is a motorcyclist’s paradise tucked away on the south coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.  It is actually an island off an island accessible by a bridge - no ferry required!

As a former Harley rider (yes, I drank the Kool-Aid and owned all the Harley clothing, too – actually wearing a Harley sweatshirt as I write this), I know the feeling of finding that perfect stretch of road, where the scenery is breathtaking, the curves keep things interesting, the ocean breeze fills your lungs, and the locals make you feel right at home. This is exactly what Isle Madame offers, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Why You’ll Love Riding Here

  • Smooth, Open Roads – Less traffic means you can truly enjoy the ride.

  • Breathtaking Coastal Views – Every turn brings another stunning view.

  • Rich Acadian Culture – Experience the warmth and history of this unique island.

  • Biker-Friendly Hospitality – Real humans with personalized, friendly service at The Clairestone Inn.

My Favorite Scenic Loop Around Isle Madame

You will be hard-pressed to find this kind of sea level coastal riding elsewhere on Cape Breton.   Isle Madame is a dream to ride, whether you’re on a motorcycle or bicycle! There’s very little traffic as you pass through quaint fishing villages, with a stunning view around every turn. Here’s my favorite loop around our island, covering approximately 100 kilometers.  We suggest planning for a half day with stops for coffee/snack, lunch or dinner, and plenty of photo ops.

  1. Start at The Clairestone Inn – Fuel up with a coffee and our complimentary continental breakfast and take in the ocean breeze from our sunlit ocean view front patio before you set off.

  2. Veteran’s Memorial Drive to Cape Auget – It doesn’t get any more sea level than this, folks. This stretch gives you wide-open ocean views that will have you pulling over just to take it all in. Stop in at the Lenoir Forge museum.

  3. Cape Auget to Petit de Grat & Little Anse – Ride through charming fishing villages, maybe catch a glimpse of a lobster boat in the harbour, and enjoy the rugged beauty of our rocky coastline. Lots of little twists and turns along this route.
Park at the end of Cape Auget and take a little walk out to Marache Point Lighthouse.  At the end of Little Anse you’ll find the perfect place for a photo op with waves crashing in the background.

  4. Back Around Rocky Bay, Poirierville, D’Escousse, Martinique, Janvrin Island – You’ll be able to turn the throttle a little more as you head towards Rocky Bay (one of two sections on the island with an 80km/hr speed limit).  On the North side of the island, ride by another quiet fishing village, a marina, The Groundswell Pub, and Lennox Passage Provincial Park (gravel road access but usually hard packed and great photo opportunity with a light house).
The ride from Martinique to Janvrin Island is forested (absolutely stunning during Fall colours).  Janvrin Island is a kayaker’s paradise - enjoy the beauty of the many little coves along the route.

  5. Head to West Arichat and Back to The Clairestone Inn – Wrap up your ride with a relaxed cruise back to the inn.
